Google+

July 9, 2011

**I do currently have some spare Google+ invites so if you’d like one just drop me a message on Twitter or leave a comment below and I’ll send you one.**

So I’ve been using Google+ for a few weeks now after receiving an invite from a friend and I have to say that I think it has some real potential from a photography perspective, especially with the rebranding and integration of Picasa as Google Photos in the coming weeks.

I won’t spend time describing the numerous features of Google+ as there is already a huge amount of articles online about just that, but if you are already using it then why not add me.

NOTE
The URL above is provided by gplus.to and provides Google+ users with a more memorable URL as the standard URLs are not easily remembered. For example mine is https://plus.google.com/u/0/110511685769077130162/.

I think that Google+ certainly needs some refinement, they need native vanity URLs and more options regarding the way your circles display updates. I personally do not like the fact that posts I have commented on belonging to other users bubble to the top of the circles (a circle is just like a twitter stream) as this means I can miss newer content that may have less comments, but I’m sure this option is something that Google can provide as they refine the product. Let’s not forget that at this stage it is officially still in beta.

I don’t use Facebook as there is something is something I’m just not comfortable with about it, so I think it’s great to see viable alternatives and who better to take on the Facebook juggernaut than Google?  Let’s just hope that Google have learnt some important lessons from their previous unsuccessful forays into social media.  From what I have seen so far it looks encouraging.

Space shuttle Atlantis photographed from nearby passenger plane

July 9, 2011

You may remember a few weeks ago when space shuttle Endeavour blasted off for the final time and the unique photograph captured by Stefanie Gordon who was in a commercial passenger plane at the time.  Well that photo isn’t quite as unique today as it once was as Ryan Graff has captured a very similar shot of the final mission for space shuttle Atlantis today.

It’s interesting to note than these shots were taken with an iPhone 4.  It’s truly wonderful to live in an age where we all have the potential to capture remarkable shots as and when they occur thanks to the ever more capable little cameras in our pockets, travelling with us everywhere we go!  It may be a sad time for the future of space travel but it’s also a massively exciting time for photography.

You can read the full story behind these images including some comments from the photographer, Ryan Graff on the Huffington Post article linked below.

Pride in Bournemouth 2011

July 5, 2011

There are currently 50 lion sculptures scattered around the streets of Bournemouth in a public art event called Pride in Bournemouth 2011. Each lion is sponsored by a local business and decorated by local artists before being placed at various locations around the town. The lions will be auctioned off on 18th September 2011 with the 75% of the net proceeds being donated to The Born Free Foundation and Julia’s House charities.

I couldn’t resist taking some time this weekend to try and find them all.  Some were much easier to find and photograph than others! :)

Find out more on the Pride in Bournemouth website.

There is a PDF document with the lion locations and some information about the lion’s name, artist and sponsor which is available on the Pride in Bournemouth website and I have also put a copy here.

NOTE:
* You may notice that there are only 49 photos in the gallery and there is supposed to be 50 lions.  Well quite simply there was one lion I was just unable to find.  I spent some time wandering around the area it is supposed to be but I couldn’t see it, so I am assuming it was not there for some reason. I have emailed the organisers to find out.

** You might also notice that lion number 15 is not actually in the shot, the plinth is there but the lion has been removed.  I am guessing this may be due to vandalism but hopefully it will be back soon.  If it returns I will update the shot.

2011/07/24Both of the missing lions have now been photographed and added to the gallery.
